The NS14 is an Australian designed sailing dinghy intended for competitive sailing. It has a simple rig, is light enough to be lifted from a trailer into the water by 3 persons of average strength and requires only reasonable fitness to sail. The NS14 is challenging for the top competitive sailor to sail at the front of the fleet. Yet it is also very forgiving so that the average not-so-athletic crew can perform well and have a lot of fun in the middle or the back of the fleet. This allows a diverse range of people to compete successfully or just have fun - from young children with their parents, to confident teenagers, to couples, to a couple of mates and enthusiastic grandparents. There have been over 1,000 boats built, so there are many boats available to suit any budget, including top quality regatta winning boats.
As a restricted development class, the Northie has kept evolving in hull shape, sail design and spar efficiency. It points high, planes to windward, is nimble and awesome on a reach. These boats are excitiing to sail in strong breezes and in light conditions, no matter if you are on the coast or sailing inland lakes and rivers.
