The beach in front of the Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club

2008/09 NS14 National Championships

The South Australian NS14 association cordially invites you to attend the 2008-09 Nationals at Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club from 27 the December 2008 to 3rd January 2009.

We have planned a traditional 9 race series and are already making the appropriate sacrifices to the weather gods. More importantly, the planning of the social aspects is well underway! We hope you will all be able to make the trip to Adelaide for what promises to be a fun filled week. You will find below some suggestions for accommodation. The list is not exhaustive and there are plenty of other nearby places to stay in a variety of price brackets, but the area is popular with tourists, so if possible, make your bookings early to avoid disappointment and outrageous prices. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like assistance, advice or information.

Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club is located about 20-25 minutes drive South of the city. The Brighton and Seacliff area itself has a thriving beach culture, being home to the yacht club as well as both Brighton and Seacliff surf life saving clubs. The beaches are well patrolled through the summer period. Surf is minimal (or actually non-existent) so the beaches are perfect for families. The popular Glenelg beach is only a few minutes drive north. Here you will find an excellent café scene with both boutique and chain shopping to be had on Jetty Road. There’s something for everyone in Glenelg.

Less than 30 minutes south of Brighton is the popular McLaren Vale wine region. This picturesque location is chock full of wineries offering tastings and cellar door sales, as well as restaurants highlighting local produce. Of course, if you want to venture slightly further a field, the Barossa Valley is also an easy day trip. You might need to come for 2 weeks so you can fit in some sailing as well!

National News and Information

02/01/09 - 2008/09 National Championship UPDATE
The NS14 National Championships are now well underway. Further updates and images will be available soon.

Race 1 was sailed under very trying conditions with the breeze almost completely dying aonly a few minutes into the first leg. A couple of boats made it around the top mark before the tide got hold of them, but the majority of the fleet spent a frustrating hour or so trying to get up to the mark. Eventually the breeze picked up to 3-5 knots and we were all back underway, but the lead boats had extended an unattainable lead. The race was finished at the wing mark on a shortened course just as the breeze kicked in to around 10 knots. Tigger Too (Hugh Tait and Tom Potter) was the winner by 1 second over Fizzy (Malcolm Page and Fiona Elliot).

Races 2 and 3 were held back to back on day two in light to moderate winds. Race 2 was subject to a general recall as everyone was a bit too keen to get going. Once the fleet got away cleanly the rest of the day was fairly uneventful. Fizzy took out both heats to take the lead in the series.

Race 4 was started in 20-25 knots and a nearly 2 metre swell in conditions that saw many entrants not even make the start line due to gear failure and early fatigue. Due to the strong breezes and the speeds obtained, the race was over quite quickly, with most of the boats that crossed the start line also finishing. Tigger Too was the winner with Peter and Kathryn Davis in Spinifex second. The run back into the beach after the race was just as difficult as the race itself with Dark Horse being dismasted on the way in. The club grounds looked more like a boat yard as everyone scrambled to get back on the water for the next day’s racing.

At the end of race 4, Tigger Too was leading from Fizzy and Spinifex.
